How to Add Page Numbers to a PDF (Free, Any Start Number)
Page numbers make a long document easier to read, print and discuss. "Please look at page 12" only works when every page has a number. If your PDF has none, for example after you merged several files, you can add them in your browser.
Step by step: add page numbers
- Open the Add Page Numbers tool.
- Choose your PDF file.
- Pick where the number goes: bottom center, bottom right, bottom left or top center.
- Choose the number to start from.
- Press Run and download your numbered PDF.
Which position is best?
- Bottom center: the most common choice for reports and letters.
- Bottom right: neat for printed, single-sided pages.
- Bottom left: useful when the right side of the page is busy.
- Top center: good if the bottom of your pages is crowded.
Starting from a number other than 1
You can set the start number in the options box. This is handy when your PDF is part two of a bigger document. If the first part has 20 pages, start this one at 21 and the numbering continues without a gap.
Best order of work
- First merge your files into one.
- Then use Reorder PDF Pages or Delete PDF Pages to get the final page order.
- Add page numbers last, so the numbers match the finished document.
If you number first and then delete or move pages, the numbers will no longer be in order.
Good to know
- The numbers are added on top of the existing page. If your page already has text at that spot, try another position.
- Keep your original and save the numbered copy under a new name.
Is it safe?
Yes. The numbers are added inside your own browser, and your PDF is not uploaded to our servers.
