How to Make a Scanned PDF Searchable (Free OCR)
You scanned a document, or someone sent you a PDF made from photos. You try to search for a word or copy a line, and nothing happens. That is because a scanned PDF is just pictures of pages. OCR fixes this. Here is what OCR is and how to use it for free.
What is OCR?
OCR stands for optical character recognition. It looks at a picture of text and works out which letters and words are there. After OCR, your PDF gets a hidden layer of real text under each page picture. The page looks the same, but now you can:
- search for words with Ctrl + F (or "Find" on a phone)
- select and copy text
- convert the PDF to Word or Excel
- let screen readers read the document aloud
Not sure if your PDF is scanned? Try to select a word. If you cannot, it is a scan. Our guide Scanned PDF vs Normal PDF explains more.
How to make a scanned PDF searchable
- Open OCR PDF and choose your scanned PDF.
- Keep Only pages without text to skip pages that are already searchable, or choose All pages.
- Press OCR PDF. The text reader goes through each page and finds the words.
- Download your searchable PDF and, if you want, the text file with all the words.
Only have photos, not a PDF?
- Turn your photos into a clean PDF with Scan to PDF or Images to PDF.
- Then run that PDF through OCR PDF.
Tips for better OCR results
- Good light, no shadows. Take photos in daylight or under bright light.
- Hold the phone straight above the page so the lines are not tilted.
- Fill the frame with the page so the text is big enough.
- Fix sideways pages first with Rotate PDF or Organize PDF.
- Check important details. OCR can misread blurry numbers, names or amounts, so always compare them with the original.
What to do after OCR
- Edit the text in Word with PDF to Word.
- Get tables into a spreadsheet with PDF to Excel.
- Copy only the words with PDF to Text.
- Make the file smaller to email with Compress PDF (Light method keeps the text layer).
Frequently asked questions
Is OCR free here?
Yes. It is free, needs no account and adds no watermark.
Is my scanned document uploaded?
No. The text reader runs inside your browser. Only the reader itself is downloaded the first time, and your file never leaves your device.
Will my PDF look different after OCR?
No. The pages stay exactly as they were. The text layer is invisible and sits under the picture.
Which languages are supported?
English for now. More languages may be added later.
Can OCR read handwriting?
Not reliably. OCR works best on clear, printed text. Handwriting usually gives poor results.
How long does it take?
A few seconds per page on most devices. Long documents and older phones take longer, so keep the page open until it finishes.
