How to Create a Fillable PDF Form for Free (No Sign-up)
Application forms, order forms, registration forms, checklists and surveys are much easier to use when people can type straight into the PDF. A fillable PDF form has real boxes that anyone can click and type into, on a computer or a phone. Here is how to make one for free, without buying software or creating an account.
Step 1: Get your form as a PDF
Most people start with a form they typed in Word or Google Docs, with lines or empty boxes where the answers go.
- In Word or Google Docs, use File → Save as / Download → PDF.
- Or convert it with our free Word to PDF tool.
- A paper form? Take photos of each page and use Scan to PDF.
Tip: leave enough empty space next to each question. Fields are easier to place, and people have room to type.
Step 2: Add the form fields
- Open Create Fillable PDF and choose your PDF. A preview of the first page appears.
- Press the button for the field you need. It appears on the page.
- Drag the field onto the right line or box. Drag the small red square in its corner to make it bigger or smaller.
- Use the arrow buttons to move to other pages and add fields there too.
Which field should I use?
- Text box: one line of text, such as a name, phone number, email or date.
- Big text box: several lines, for an address, comments or a short answer.
- Checkbox: a box people can tick, such as "I agree" or "Yes / No" choices.
- Dropdown: a list of choices, such as a city, size or department. Type the choices separated by commas, for example Dubai, Sharjah, Abu Dhabi.
Step 3: Give every field a clear name
Click a field to see its settings. Replace the automatic name (like Text 1) with something clear, such as Full name or Phone number. Every field needs its own name. If two fields share a name, the tool tells you before you continue.
You can also choose a Text size for text boxes. Auto makes the text shrink to fit the box, which works well for most forms.
Step 4: Create, download and test
- Press Create Fillable PDF and download your new file.
- Open it in your browser or in Adobe Acrobat Reader, click into a box and type to check that everything works.
- You can also test it in our free Fill PDF Form tool, which lists every field it finds.
Now you can email the form, upload it to your website or share it in a chat. The people who receive it can fill it in and send it back.
Tips for a professional form
- Keep fields lined up. Make fields in the same column the same width.
- Make boxes big enough. An email address or full address needs more space than you think.
- Keep your original PDF. If you want to change a field later, it is easiest to start again from the original.
- Add instructions on the page. Write "Please type in English" or "Use CAPITAL letters" in your Word file before converting it.
- Ask for a signature separately. People can sign the completed form with Sign PDF.
Common problems and quick fixes
- "This PDF is password protected": open it with Unlock PDF first, using its password.
- The PDF already has some fields: they are kept, and your new fields are added. Just use names that are not already in the form.
- Pages are sideways or in the wrong order: fix them with Organize PDF before adding fields.
- The file is too big to email: make it smaller with Compress PDF using the Light method, which keeps the text and form boxes. The Strong method turns pages into images and removes the boxes.
Is it safe?
Your PDF is processed inside your own browser and is not uploaded to any server. That makes it a good choice for company forms or documents with private details.
